Tuesday 17th January – Film Night -Illuminations: The Private Lives of Medieval Kings’ Part 1 with Dr. Janina Ramirez 

Workshop at Cufos – Saturday 18th February - 10.00am -4.00pm – Tutor : Cherrell Avery – ‘Gold and metal leaf, colour and calligraphy’.

In this workshop you will learn how to create brilliant eye catching effects to enhance and support your calligraphy.

You will be guided through a variety of simple techniques to enable you to write on and incise into gold and metal transfer leaf.
Explore ways to add layers, distress , colour and write on the surface using acrylic inks and oil pastels.

Cost: £25.00 for NLLA/SLLA members £30.00 non members

     

 

Tuesday 21st February – Kathy Abbott – From Hats to Headcaps

A chance discovery of the craft of bookbinding changed Kathy Abbott’s career path. She will talk about her journey and the wide range of work she undertakes, encompassing Shakespeare’s First Folio, Islamic manuscripts, and the inspiration she gets for her Fine Bindings from her love of the written word.

Tuesday 25th April – NLLA’s sixteenth AGM – Followed by an interesting talk by Mark L’Argent – ” Where were records and documents kept prior to the establishment of The State Paper Office in 1578, records such as the Magna Carta, Parliamentary records, and priceless manuscripts like The Lindisfarne Gospels and Beowulf? ”

Workshop at Cufos – Saturday 10th June – 10.00am -4.00pm -Drop in Fun day workshop ! Come and work in a light spacious environment with other NLLA members.If you attended Cherrell’s workshop in February this is an ideal opportunity to practise what you learnt and make progress with one of the pieces you started.Otherwise, bring any project you are planning or perhaps some ‘work in progress’.We aim to cover the cost of the room hire (£69), so the more who turn up, the smaller the donation!

Tuesday 16th May – Rachel Yallop – Title ‘Taking a Line for a Walk: My Calligraphic Journey’

Rachel Yallop will talk about her 30 year career as a calligrapher and lettering designer.

She will also be demonstrating using various tools and techniques and showing original examples

of her work.

 

 

Tuesday 20th June – Practical evening – Theme ” Sun, Sea, Sand ”  Tonight’s project is to write one, or all, of these words:  

sun     sea     sand    on card or paper no larger than A5 size.  Bring your usual writing materials plus choice of card or paper.

Tuesday 18th July – Summer Party – “Paint a Pebble”  A party with a purpose! We have pebbles for you to write on: different sizes, smooth surface, shades of grey. Bring suitable writing implements and a selection of colours with which to make your mark.

Tuesday 19th September -Practical evening

Workshop at Cufos  – Saturday 14th October – Tutor : Gaynor Goffe – ” Colour in the Pen and Backgrounds ”

In this workshop you will create coloured backgrounds using acrylic and gauche paints and develop some italic variations to compliment your new colourful backgrounds. Should be a fun and colourful day!

Tuesday 17th October – – Brenda Berman, Designer and Letter carver‘A Lifetime in Lettering and How the Hand Written Word was the Beginning of it All’

After a lifetime spent trying to communicate the importance of ‘the word’ and lettering in its many manifestations retirement was not an attractive option. In 2016 Brenda took a year out to reorder her living space. In sorting through endless ‘stuff’ she saw that preliminary plans for commissioned work, exhibition things or teaching almost always included sketches using pen lettering or a broad edge tool. This is what this illustrated talk is all about.
